Started my 4 year old son out with a balance bike. Once he got the hang of that we moved up to the 12 inch tire pedal bike. After mastering that we put him on a big box 16" tire Mongoose from the W*mart we got as a gift. He's able to ride it really well but its a tank. Very bulky and heavy, which is pretty common for all the 16" tire big box bikes he's tried. It looked way cooler than it functioned. Put him on the Giant Animator and it was perfect for him. Not too heavy and just the right stride length for his little chicken legs. Hes able to ride faster with this bike then the 12" or the 16" and his turning capabilities are way better than compared to the big box 16". Training wheels are a waste of time! Balance bike is the key! I thought about buying used but the guys at Eden Bicycles in Castro Valley havevbeen taking care of me and my 29er and they are actual bike enthusiast not like the salesmen at the other huge bike shops. If your considering it, talk to Jener or John @ Eden. They really know their stuff

We looked at a lot of options for my son's first bike, from big box to bike shop. This was definitely worth the purchase price, even though it was quite a bit more than some other options. The fit of the bike is great and you know that the manufacturer will stand behind it. My son (3 1/2 years old) didn't fit well on any of the other 16" bikes, so we were looking at 14" bikes from the box stores. The 14" bike size is relatively new and somewhat rare, though, so apparently the tires for these are very difficult to find. Decision made - might as well buy something that you know will be supported. Anyway, we couldn't even get him to sit on his big wheel or tricycle before we bought this bike. After getting comfortable with the pedaling on his first day, he rode it for about a half mile on just his second day. Now he asks for a bike ride every night after dinner. If you are looking at one of these, don't be put off by the price. Not every company makes bikes that actually fit and can be adjusted to the rider. In the end, a bike that fits will be safer, easier to ride, and more fun.
